PROGRAM

Due to the many issues related to building along a waterway, careful evaluation and study of the site influencers informed the location and placement of the 3,500 square-foot program. The resulting plan is a highly sophisticated spatial arrangement of interconnected volumes designed to engage the site and enhance the human experience.

COMPOSITION

The composition of the project is a series of symmetrical components assembled along the two axes to create an asymmetrical configuration. A consistent unit of measure was employed in both plan, section, and elevation providing harmony between all the parts and unity to the whole, with geometric volumes of squares and golden rectangles based on this unit establishing scale and order. The result is a formal and compact disposition of forms in which a unity between the plan and the exterior takes shape.

Inspired by the horizontal lines of the river, the architecture creates a low horizontal profile by using a continuous concrete platform at its base and employing a series of board sheltering flat roofs, resulting in a form that reinforces the line of repose and horizontal nature of the river.

Between these horizontal planes, large expanses of glass windows and doors provide access to daylight and views through out the house with particular openings framing specific vistas to the landscape beyond.

One of the main interior spaces of the house is the combination living room-music room. Organized around the north south axis, a central two-sided fireplace unifies the two uniquely different volumes. The living room, a golden rectangle form with its thirteen-foot ceilings, continuous clear-story windows, and nine-foot-tall terrace doors creates a dramatic and engaging space that takes full advantage of its relationship with the river and sunset views, while the square volume of the music room with its 8-foot-tall ceilings, skylights, and windows framing the koi pond, provides a more intimate richly light-fill setting.

MATERIALS

Looking for a low maintenance exterior, a limited pallet of materials containing rich texture, color, and scale, was selected for durability, sustainability, and maintainability. These materials include off-white stucco, cement board, phenolic panel, and natural stone.

SUSTAINABILIYT

Starting with an integrated site design, a comprehensive approach to establishing a sustainable building and site was undertaken to begin the process of achieving a future goal of net-zero. Several sustainable design strategies have been employed in the concept of the project. Although located on a narrow site with its long axis east to west, basic components of passive solar design were incorporated to accommodate the specific effects of heat gain and loss, daylighting, and natural ventilation.
